Sometimes the roll of thunder doesn't hear your cry

by Greatpilgrim Greatpilgrim is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Books, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Jun 11 '02
Pros: an eye-opening, soul-shaking book told authentically and simply
Cons: depressing, not a “feel-good” story or a read-aloud, a few characters are shallow
Sometimes, too, the biggest concepts comes in the smallest and humblest packaging. My clear proof is a worn paperback children’s book I picked up for 25 cents, a book that rocked my world after several years of sitting on the shelf unread. You...

Pros: Compelling story, beautifully written, great characters.
Cons: None
Cassie Logan has great belief in her own worth, her Mamma has taught her well and not just because her Mamma is a teacher, but because her Mamma is proud of her brood and pride is an expensive commodity in Mississippi in the 1930’s. Cassie and her ...

New Teachers this Book is Timeless!

by lghtseeker , Jul 04 '01
Pros: Well developed characters. Superior use of dialogue. Realistic depiction of the past.
Cons: Some objectionable language.
I took a Children's Literature class at the University of Central Florida, and Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry was one of the books I studied in class. This book is considered to be a timeless classic that teachers would do well to use in the...

You will wish for more of this story!

by mind-full Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 200, Jul 10 '00
Pros: gripping story-telling, attention to detail without going overboard, fine choice of issues to illustrate, excellent character development, believable, amazingly real
Cons: the story ends!
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry covers so many issues in the lives of children, teens and adults, from learning to stand up for ones beliefs to coming of age lessons. What amazes me is the author's ability to convey these issues succinctly and in a way...

Hear My Cry: This is a Great Book!

by dheil , May 10 '00
Pros: teaches a great lesson, historical
Cons: none
Mildred Taylor did a fantastic job with this book. It relates the life of an African American family and the turmoil and trouble they face in Mississippi in 1933. Each character in the Logan family comes to life through Taylor's words. Each person...

A powerful story!

by Carrisford , Jun 24 '00
Pros: Well-written; Powerful; A must-read
Cons: Some kids don't like it--it may need to grow on you
Mix a powerful story with a daughter of an expert storyteller (who does quite well at storytelling herself!) and you have everything Mildred D. Taylor has written. This volume, easily her best, is riveting, engaging, and frightening. It is as relevant...

Roll of Thunder? Try a thunderstorm

by bhale7904 , Dec 20 '00
Pros: good historical views
Cons: none
Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry will bring to life many of the problems faced by an African American family in the deep south during the 30's. We see how many families were treated as second class citizens even though they had many of the same desires and...

Here's what I say: This is a great book!

by raptors5555 , Oct 07 '00
Pros: great story!
Cons: none
Wow! Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry has really got me rolling on how great this book is! Taylor does a great job of signifying, rationalizing, and showing how life was for all people in the 1930's. She gets down to the truth in how life was like for...

A cliffhanger to never be forgotten

by mbbuk55 , May 29 '01
Pros: Shows the horrible prejudice behavior to blacks in America.
Cons: Sometimes is slow moving and boring.
Chapters 11 and 12 were like the icing on a cupcake. They wrapped up a good story, just like the creamy, vanilla icing that you would lick off of a cupcake. The reason for this is because of the huge climax involving T.J. The story ends at a spot...

I Head Your Cry
by willis3205 ,May 03 '05
Pros: It shows the realness of the depression back then.
Cons: It wasn't fully developed.
Roll of thunder hear my cry is a very interesting book. The title of this book caught my attenion ,by it outgoing and touching words. This book also gives a description of how it is being black growing up during The Great Depreesion segeration.
The book Roll of thunder hear my cry is a historically fictiton book. The author Mildred Taylor did a great job of displaying the the troubles of growing up black thought the eyes of a little girl. This book was about this little girl named Cassie and her family the Logans. She had 3 brothers Stacey ,Little Man ,and Chirstoper John. Her grandmother who stays with them owns land that that the owner of the Mechantile trys to force her into selling the land. In this process he almost kills her son, and tarted & feathered her neighbor.
